The NV4500 5 speed manual transmission is primarily a New Process Gear design that was assembled at the Muncie Transmission plant from late 1991 to mid-2006. Even though the joint venture ended in 2002 when GM sold it's 36% stake in the company to Daimler Chrysler, the Muncie plant continued to build NV4500 transmissions for Dodge to the 2005 model year and GM for the 2007 model year. It was also used on 3500 4x2 trucks with tubular beam front axles. This type of suspension utilizes 4 short link arms behind the axle (2 on each side) and a track bar attached to the front of the axle. All 5 links are anchored to the frame.

The upper and lower Link Arms may also be referred to as Suspension Arms, Control Arms, or Trailing Arms. Regardless of the name, these four arms are mounted longitudinally behind the axle and they determine the axle's fore and aft position and axle caster setting. An adjustable cam on each lower control arm allows for caster adjustment. Each of the stamped steel arms has a bushing in each end to isolate road shocks from being directly transmitted to the frame. There are two parallel link arms for each side of the axle and they attach to a stamped steel bracket welded to to the back of axle in line with the coil spring. The upper ends pivot on brackets welded to the frame. The stamped steel link arms are relatively weak and they can be damaged by large rocks or significant front end impacts. On the plus side, the link arms typically have more ground clearance than a 3-link, radius arm suspension.

The 5th link is called the Track Bar. The Track Bar more or less keeps the axle centered under the vehicle. The lower end attaches to the right side of the axle housing. The upper end attaches to the left side of the frame. Open Knuckle Axles can use either ball joints or king pins which have their own seals.

Up until the mid-1960's, almost all production 4x4s through the 1 ton class had closed knuckle front axles. Ford started the trend to transition to open knuckle axles with the 1966 F100 and Bronco. At the start of the 1976 model year, all domestic 4x4s rated for 1 ton or less was built with open knuckle axles. The biggest drawback to closed knuckle axles is maneuverability. Closed knuckle axles can usually only turn 28 to 30 degrees. Open knuckle axles can often handle a 40-42 degree turn. A vehicle with an open knuckle front axle has a dramatically smaller turning radius compared to a similar vehicle with a closed knuckle axle. Theoretically, closed knuckle axle parts bathed in lubricant should outlast open knuckle parts, but due to leakage and lack of maintenance, closed knuckle axles often have premature part failures.

Years popular domestic 4x4s transitioned from closed to open knuckle axles:
1966: Ford F100, Bronco
1969: Chevy Blazer
1970: All other Chevy and GMC 4x4 models
1971: IHC Scout
1972: Dodge W100, W200
1972: IHC 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton Truck (most)
1972: Jeep CJ and Commando
1974: Jeep Wagoneer and Truck
1975: Dodge W300
1976: Ford F250

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0603/0206/5741/files/ball-joint-type-open-knuckle-front-axle-500__15746_6943__89508.1707939819.1280.1280.jpg?v=1742691091
sku-id-a-1959-1979-ford-dana-4x4-front-axle-idn-129
ID a 1959-1979 Ford Dana 4x4 Front Axle IDN-129

1959-1979 Ford Dana 30, Dana 44, and Dana 60 front axles were stamped on the front of one of the tubes (usually the left tube) with an axle identification or Bill of Material (BOM) Number. The nearly identical AAM 1355 U-joint in first appeared in 2003 Ram front CV driveshafts but it is already obsolescent as it provided no advantage over the original 1350 series u-joint. The published OE manufacturer dimensions for the two series of u-joints differ by only 0.003". The difference is so small, that the manufacturing tolerances of the yokes overlap. The two series of u-joints are essentially interchangeable although changing the snap ring thickness may be required to get the best fit.

A 1350 or 1355 Series U-Joint is retained in driveshaft yokes by Snap Rings that fit into grooves machined in the driveshaft yoke ears and that seat against the end of the U-Joint Cap. For most 1972 and prior 1350 applications, the u-joints will be secured to matching end yokes by u-bolts. From 1973-1986 either u-bolts (Ford) or Straps/Bolts (GM) are common. From 1987-on Straps and bolt are the original equipment choice for end yoke attachment. Strap and Bolts have become the preferred way to secure the u-joint caps to an end yoke. The main reason is u-bolts have a tendency to distort the caps leading to reduced service life. 1350/1355 series end yokes will have cast tabs in the yoke saddles to hold the u-joint from lateral movement.

Two methods of forging the cross are common. The traditional Hot-Forged cross is cheaper to produce, but the cross hardness is a lower Rockwell value than the more modern and more expensive cold-forged crosses use in premium quality universal joints. Today, greaseable u-joints typically have hot-forged crosses and lubed for life u-joints will usually have cold-forged crosses. For older or lower power applications either cross design should provide satisfactory service, but for later model vehicles with either Diesel or high-torque gas engines we recommend you use premium u-joints with cold-forged crosses.

Spicer 1350 series Driveshaft Universal Joint Specifications:
Cap Diameter: 1-3/16"
Overall Width of Installed U-Joint: 3.625"

AAM 1355 series Driveshaft Universal Joint Specifications:
Cap Diameter: 1-3/16"
Overall Width of Installed U-Joint: 3.622"

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0603/0206/5741/files/1350-1355-series-id-1600__30847_7197__44804.1707941561.1280.1280.jpg?v=1742693181
sku-id-my-1977-1993-dodge-full-size-4x4-front-cv-driveshaft-idn-143
ID My 1977-1993 Dodge Full Size 4x4 Front CV Driveshaft IDN-143

The original equipment front CV driveshaft used on 1975-1/2 and all 1976 to 1993 Dodge and Plymouth full size 4x4 models used a Saginaw Double-Cardan Constant Velocity joint at the transfer case end and a slip joint mounting a Detroit Universal internal c-clip universal joint at the axle end. It is not really unusual to find some of these older Dodge 4x4s have been modified with different make/size front driveshafts. We have seen a few 1994-2002 trucks with replacement Saginaw CV shafts (last used by Dodge in 1993), larger size upgrade shafts especially in lifted, high horsepower trucks, and even some trucks with just single Cardan front shafts (no CV). While chances are your truck has all the factory parts, make sure before ordering! If you are unable to identify your parts, e-mail us some good photos.

CV Joint: For the 1994 to 2002 model year Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 trucks, Dodge used 1330 series Double Cardan Constant Velocity (CV) front driveshafts. These shafts have a half-round flange type Spicer style Double Cardan CV joint with 1-1/16" diameter u-joint cups at the transfer case end. All the parts in the Double Cardan CV Joint are the same for all 1994 to 2002 model year Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 trucks.

Slip Yokes: Three different slip joints were used depending on the production date. 1994 to 1998 trucks had a fine spline with a u-joint with internal c-clips. Early 1999 used QU40701 fine spline yoke with a special u-joint using external snap rings in the slip yoke and internal C-clips for the pinion yoke. Later production 1999 CV Shafts used the same universal joint, but with QU40771 coarse spline yoke. 2000-2002 used QU40771 coarse spline yoke and a u-joint with external snap rings in the slip yoke. No snap ring was used at the pinion yoke as side thrust is controlled by tabs cast into the pinion yoke. Yoke style changes are not always exactly the same as the model year change so some overlap may be encountered in 1998-2000 model years.

Slip Joints Splines: Two different slip joint splines protected by rubber boots were used depending upon the production date. 1994 to 1998 trucks plus some 1999 models would have a 1-9/32" fine spline yoke and stub. Many 1999, and all 2000-2002 shafts were built with an 1-3/8" coarse spline slip joint. Yoke style changes are not always exactly the same as the model year change so some overlap may be encountered in 1998-1999 model year trucks.

Front U-Joints: For the 1994 to 2002 model years, Dodge used 3 different front universal joints to connect the driveshaft to the front axle. 1994-1998 used a Detroit Universal 7290 series front joint (TK40722, QU40775) that has 4 internal C-Clips to secure the u-joint cups in place. 1999 was a transition year that used a front universal joint with 2 external Snap Rings and 2 Internal C-Clips (TK40804, QU40764). 2000 to 2002 model year trucks have shafts with the same external snap ring u-joint used in the CV head (TK40721, QU40774). The model year changes are not necessarily absolute as the U.S. and Mexican factories had slightly different inventories and build schedules. For example: a late production 1998 may have the 1999 joint and an early 1999 might have the 1998 joint.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0603/0206/5741/files/1330cv__19741_7220__38956.1707941642.1280.1280.jpg?v=1742693339
sku-spicer-end-yoke-style-constant-velocity-cv-head-identification-idn-145
Spicer End Yoke Style Constant Velocity CV Head Identification IDN-145

Spicer first supplied supplied End Yoke Style Double Cardan Constant Velocity Joints to General Motors for 1967 Model year K series 4x4. The 1330F or as it is also known as 1330SP U-Joint differs from regular 1330 series u-joints on the diameter of two of the u-joint cups. A problem with standard 1330 u-joints with 1-1/16" diameter u-joint cups is the distortion of the caps when u-bolts used to secure the u-joint to a yoke are over-tightened. If the u-joint is attached to a end-yoke with u-bolts with a center to center u-bolt width of 1-37/64" it is a 1330F. If the center to center u-bolt width is 1-13/32" the yoke is made for 1-1/16" diameter 1330 caps. However, two different width bearings were used, either QU50874 single row 16mm (5/8") width bearing with 14 11/32" Balls or QU50873 double row 15/16" width bearing with 24 3/8" balls. During the 1990's, New Process was building transfer case models that for a given application were interchangeable as assemblies, but used different input shafts and input bearings. While a narrow bearing cannot be used on an input made for the wide bearing and visa-versa, the combined matching bearings and shafts are totally interchangeable for similar applications.

When rebuilding a transfer case, you obviously need the same width bearing as the original. When you have to replace your input shaft either due to wear issues or for a conversion, you have the option of changing the bearing width along with the input shaft. Many 231/233/241/242 Input Shafts are physically interchangeable as long as you use the correct input bearing for the shaft. For example, If you are doing a manual transmission swap on a 1998 Automatic transmission equipped Cummins powered Ram 3500 truck with NP241DHD Assembly number 52105028, you can replace the original QU50640 input shaft/QU50874 Single Row Narrow Bearing with QU10889 29 Spline Input/QU50873 Double Row Wide Bearing.

Both the Single Row and Double Row Bearings were used in applications from little 4 cylinder SUVs to High Output Cummins Diesel powered Ram 1 ton trucks. For performance applications, replacing a Single Row Bearing/Input combo with the higher load rated Double Row Bearing (plus matching input) would be a good upgrade, however for stock engine applications both bearing types are fully able to handle original equipment engine horsepower and torque.

Also See:
IDN-400 NP241D Planetary Tooth Differences
IDN-402 Input Shaft High Range Clutch Teeth
IDN-403 NP231/NP241 Input Shaft Chart
IDN-404 ID My 1994-2002 Dodge NP241DLD or NP241DHD Transfer Case.
XV-400 1998-2002 Dodge NP241DHD Input Shaft and Related Parts
XV-401 1998-2002 Dodge NP241DLD Input Shaft and Related Parts
XV-402 1994-1997 Dodge NP241DHD Input Shaft and Related Parts
XV-403 1994-1997 Dodge NP241DLD Input Shaft and Related Parts

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0603/0206/5741/files/idn-401_i1_1600__86603_11972__12360.1707947831.1280.1280.jpg?v=1742702016
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0603/0206/5741/collections/ram-1350-1410-front-cv-head-compare-1200__73489_d2480093-5b21-41cd-9dbd-67b053f47bc0.jpg?v=1773182405
