However, straight gear lube will almost always seep past the knuckle seal which covers the inside of the tires, stains the garage floor and is unacceptable for current environmental standards. Since vintage vehicles that used these joints were generally lighter in weight, built with much less powerful engines, and with less transfer case low range gear reduction compared to current models, the joint size is probably at least barely adequate for most stock uses.
