To obtain maximum cross strength, the journal diameters were increased and the needle bearings used in conventional u-joints were eliminated. This means the bearing cap is directly in contact with the cross journal. This is typically not a problem for competition and offroad use as the speed and length of operation are usually modest compared to that of daily driver.
