The original crank seal had a steel outer shell which was pressed into the aluminum seal adapter. Over time, the steel shell would become compressed by the seal adapter due to the different expansion\/contraction rates of the two parts. In many cases, the seal shell would get compressed to the point oil would seep between the shell and adapter. Most of the seals I replaced on 1989-1994 engines were so loose, I easily pulled them out with a dental pick.
