The SM465\/CH465 manual transmissions are comparable in strength and durability to Borg Warner T98\/T18\/T19 and New Process NP435 4 speeds of the same era. 465 series transmissions have synchronized 2nd through 4th gears and a constant mesh 1st gear. Because 465 series transmissions use bushings instead of bearings to support 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears, these transmissions can experience wear issues when used for extensive slow speed work such as weed spraying. As an example, my TM1003 NV4500 Transmission Service Manual has 116 pages and over 400 color photographs plus very detailed rebuild and technical information to cover rebuilding a NV4500 5 Speed Manual Transmission. The Dodge Factory Service Manual coverage includes a few dozen line drawings spread over about 40 pages. Some of the more popular PTO capable transmissions using this cover include Borg Warner T18, T19\/T98, Muncie SM465, New Process NP435, and New Venture NV4500\/NV5600. The same cover size is also found on imported Getrag G360 and ZF 5 or 6 speed transmissions. Mid-production units used anaerobic sealant just on the input retainer and RTV for everything else. Later production transmissions used black RTV Sealant (\u003ca href=\"\/products\/90006-qu90006-large-3-35-ounce-tube-ultra-black-rtv-sealant\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eQU90006\u003c\/a\u003e or \u003ca href=\"\/products\/90005-qu90005-small-0-5-ounce-tube-ultra-black-rtv-sealant\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eQU90005\u003c\/a\u003e) for everything. Either type of sealant works fine (except the PTO covers ALWAYS should be sealed with RTV), but I prefer RTV for all components. Regardless of which sealant you use, make sure excess sealant does not block the lube access hole at the top of input retainer pilot that fits into the transmission case! Also, the threaded holes in the main case for the four retainer bolts and 12 PTO bolts are open ended, so you must use new bolts with factory applied threadlocker or apply Threadlocker (\u003ca href=\"\/products\/24200-s24200-medium-strength-blue-242-threadlocker-6ml\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eS24200\u003c\/a\u003e) to your existing bolts to prevent oil seepage past the bolt threads.
