The main engineering reason for the change was to increase universal joint life by minimizing cup distortion caused by the u-bolts actually deforming the cups when tightened. Ford tried to address this back in the 1970's and 1980' by using larger diameter cups with thicker walls on the 1330F series universal joint. The u-bolts are probably the stronger of the two methods of u-joint retention, but of little real value unless extreme driveline angles or competition reliability are a factor.
