For the 1967 model year, the SM420 was the only 4 speed manual transmission used in the 4x4 models and the primary 4 speed used in 4x2 trucks. Unlike earlier years, the 4x4 and 4x2 transmissions are the different for 1967 as the transfer case is directly mounted to the back of the transmission for 1967 4x4s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe SM420 has a transmission case length that is less than 10-1\/2\". The compact design was made possible by using the same part for mainshaft 1st gear, mainshaft reverse gear, and 1-2 synchro slider. Some of the more popular PTO capable transmissions using this cover include Borg Warner T18, T19\/T98, Muncie SM465, New Process NP435, and New Venture NV4500\/NV5600. The same cover size is also found on imported Getrag G360 and ZF 5 or 6 speed transmissions. Mid-production units used anaerobic sealant just on the input retainer and RTV for everything else. Later production transmissions used black RTV Sealant (\u003ca href=\"\/products\/90006-qu90006-large-3-35-ounce-tube-ultra-black-rtv-sealant\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eQU90006\u003c\/a\u003e or \u003ca href=\"\/products\/90005-qu90005-small-0-5-ounce-tube-ultra-black-rtv-sealant\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eQU90005\u003c\/a\u003e) for everything. Either type of sealant works fine (except the PTO covers ALWAYS should be sealed with RTV), but I prefer RTV for all components. Regardless of which sealant you use, make sure excess sealant does not block the lube access hole at the top of input retainer pilot that fits into the transmission case! Also, the threaded holes in the main case for the four retainer bolts and 12 PTO bolts are open ended, so you must use new bolts with factory applied threadlocker or apply Threadlocker (\u003ca href=\"\/products\/24200-s24200-medium-strength-blue-242-threadlocker-6ml\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eS24200\u003c\/a\u003e) to your existing bolts to prevent oil seepage past the bolt threads.
