Ford used four different Spindle Nut configurations in 1983.5-1996 era. Axles with Double Spindle Nuts used the same Inner and Outer Nuts, but different Lock Washer depending upon if the axle was equipped with manual or auto hubs. A single, Ratchet Type Spindle Nut was used for most 1985-1992 manual hub applications after which Ford again used a Double Spindle Nut Set for manual hubs through 1996. In late 1992 or early 1993, Ford introduced a new automatic hub that uses a single, unique, stepped, rounded hex nut that is only compatible with auto hubs. The auto hubs proved to be somewhat finicky, so by now, most 1995-1996 era auto hubs have been replaced with manual hubs and Double Spindle Nut Sets.
The dead, hollow spindle design of the 1983.5-1996 era Ford Dana 44 IFS axles uses one QK4734.5 needle bearing to support the outer axle shaft. Ford used two different Spindle Seal types for 1983.5-1996 Dana 44IFS Front Axles. A two part Spindle Seal and Thrust Washer design was new for 1993, replacing the earlier four piece set-up used on most trucks from 1983.5-1992. Personally, I prefer the older Seal design which can be retrofitted to 1993-1996 trucks if you order (2) QU40058 Slingers and (1) QK4739 Seal and Thrust Washer Set.
