Unlike the 1994-2001 Ram 1500, the ½ ton 2002 Ram 1500 would share relatively few drivetrain and chassis parts with the ¾ ton Ram 2500. Further down the line, the Ram 1500 underwent a body redesign for the 2009 model, just before Ram became a separate brand from Dodge. As for the axles and transfer cases, the Ram 1500 has had a number of changes, but the basic design of a chain-drive transfer case, 4x4 IFS front axle and semi-float beam-type rear axle remained the same.
