Dodge had been building Power Wagon 4x4s for the civilian market since 1946, but by the mid 1950's, the Power Wagon design was nearing obsolescence. To compete against the already in production International S120 3/4 ton 4x4 and the soon to be released Jeep FC170, Dodge in 1957, introduced factory 4x4 W100 1/2 ton and W200 3/4 ton trucks as "Power Giant" models. Then in 1958, Dodge released the W300 4x4 1 ton to become the first manufacturer with a full line of civilian 1/2 to to 1 ton factory 4x4 conventional cab trucks.

For the 1961 model year, Dodge debuted the new Sweptline and Utiline pickups, but underneath, the drivetrain remained much the same as the 1957-1960 models. Dodge even kept old Power Giant line in production for W100 based Town wagons all the way to 1966. 1969 would bring a minor body facelift, but big changes were made to the drivetrain and these would carry through until the end of the 1971 model year.
